Bletchley Park

Bletchley Park

When you combine good weather, a pleasant journey on a luxury coach, convivial company and a very well-presented venue, all the makings of an excellent day out are there. So it proved when over 50 members travelled to Bletchley Park.

In recent years, Bletchley Park has undergone significant upgrades for visitors - particularly in how it explains the quite complex processes involved in code-breaking in simple-to-understand terms. As is also the trend with museums of all types these days, Bletchley has a lot of interactive exhibits to provide fun and explanation to attract the younger (and older) generation.
The achievements of the WWII codebreakers have been well-documented and portrayed in the media and films such as 'The Imitation Game'. The environment in which they worked has now been mostly restored to how they would have been during WWII, augmented by suitable bits of video playing in most of the many huts. Altogether, a most informative and inspiring place to visit.
On the same site is The National Museum of Computing which contains a wealth of working computing artefacts ranging from the original Colossus computer and Bombe machines designed and used by the codebreakers - through to mainframe and personal machines including the BBC Micro and a large display of items including Artari, PET and other gaming consoles and , of course, early IBM PCsnd Apple Macs. All of the galleries have very enthusiastic and well-informed volunteers able to talk about the exhibits and answer visitor questions.
